Growing Little by Little

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

Proverbs 13:20

Proverbs 13 is full of patient, unglamorous wisdom — the kind that doesn't promise overnight results but promises lasting ones. “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” It's a small verse, but it pushes back against our culture's obsession with shortcuts. Slow, honest growth outlasts every quick scheme. The same patience shows up in verse 12: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Solomon doesn't pretend waiting is easy. He names the ache honestly — a delayed hope really does make the heart sick. But he also promises that fulfillment, when it comes, brings life. This is permission to grieve the waiting seasons without losing sight of the tree of life still ahead. One of the most practical verses in the whole book follows soon after: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” We rarely give ourselves credit for how much our closest relationships shape us. Solomon is blunt — who you walk with, you eventually become like. It's worth taking inventory of your circle, not out of judgment, but out of care for your own formation. Guarding your lips, being diligent instead of demanding instant gratification, choosing wise companions, and holding hope with patience — none of it is flashy. But this chapter insists that a quiet, steady faithfulness is exactly what produces a life that lasts.

🌿Wisdom

Chapter 13 teaches that wisdom is cultivated slowly through disciplined speech, patient diligence, and careful choice of companions — not through shortcuts or isolation.

  • ✦Identify one relationship that is shaping you toward foolishness and set a boundary (13:20).
  • ✦Choose a long-term, honest approach to a financial or personal goal rather than a shortcut (13:11).
  • ✦Practice guarding your lips in one specific conversation this week (13:3).

💡Understanding

Understanding this chapter means recognizing that our companions, our patience, and our daily discipline quietly shape the trajectory of our lives, often more than any single dramatic decision does.

  • ✦Evaluate your closest friendships honestly and ask whether they're forming you toward wisdom.
  • ✦Sit with a current unmet hope and bring the ache of it honestly to God rather than numbing it.
  • ✦Choose one habit of diligence to build this month instead of chasing a quick fix.
