Turning Away Wrath

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1

Proverbs 15 opens with a verse many of us know by heart but few of us practice in the moment: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” It's such a simple principle, and yet how often do we meet harshness with more harshness, escalating a conflict that a soft word could have defused? Solomon isn't asking us to be weak or silent — he's asking us to be wise enough to choose our tone deliberately. This chapter also reassures us that nothing escapes God's notice: “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” That could sound intimidating, but read alongside the rest of the chapter, it's actually comforting — we are seen, known, and never forgotten by God, whether we're in a season of joy or heartache. And Solomon has so much to say about the heart's disposition. “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” “The cheerful heart has a continual feast.” Circumstances don't have to dictate our joy; a heart anchored in God can carry a kind of steady gladness even through hard days, while an oppressed or embittered heart can make every day feel wretched regardless of circumstance. The chapter closes by returning us to the foundation: “Wisdom's instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.” Gentle words, wise counsel, a cheerful heart — none of it grows from self-effort alone. It grows from humbling ourselves before God first, and letting that posture shape everything else we say and do.
