A Tower to Run To

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Proverbs 18:10

Proverbs 18 begins with a warning about isolation: an unfriendly person pursues selfish ends, cutting off from community and sound judgment. It’s a reminder that withdrawing from others — even when it feels safer — often leads us away from wisdom rather than toward it. God made us for connection, not isolation dressed up as self-protection. In the middle of the chapter sits one of Scripture’s great comfort verses: the name of the Lord is a fortified tower, and the righteous run to it and are safe. When life feels like quarrels, opinions, and unreliable friendships, there is still a place to run that never moves and never fails. Running to God’s name isn’t passive — it’s an active choice to seek Him first when trouble comes. The chapter also holds up a mirror to our speech and our listening. Answering before listening is called out plainly as folly and shame, and the tongue is said to hold the power of life and death. Every conversation is a small stewardship — will your words build a tower for someone else to run to, or tear down what took years to build? Today, notice where you might be isolating instead of connecting, and practice listening fully before you answer. And remember: whatever quarrel or crisis you’re facing, the name of the Lord is still a fortified tower, strong enough to hold you.
