A Future Hope That Will Not Be Cut Off

“There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.”

Proverbs 23:18

Proverbs 23 speaks directly to weariness — wearing yourself out to get rich, trusting your own cleverness to secure a future that never feels secure enough. It’s an honest word for anyone caught in the cycle of striving, always chasing a finish line that keeps moving. The chapter invites you to consider what — and whom — you’re truly working for. It also warns about appearances that don’t match reality: someone might say "eat and drink" while their heart is elsewhere, a reminder to pay attention not just to words but to what’s underneath them, in others and in ourselves. Applying your heart to instruction, the chapter says, matters more than being impressed by surface presentation. One of the most tender verses here addresses envy: do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord — there is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. When it looks like people who ignore God are flourishing, this verse steadies us. Our hope isn’t contingent on comparing our current chapter to someone else’s highlight reel; it’s secured by God Himself. The chapter ends with an intimate plea: "give me your heart." Ultimately, wisdom isn’t about mastering rules but about giving God your heart fully. Today, set down the exhausting pursuit of proving yourself through wealth or cleverness, refuse to envy those who seem to have it easier, and offer God your heart instead of just your efforts.
