Leaning Somewhere Else

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6 might be the most familiar verses in this whole book, and for good reason. Solomon tells us plainly where to place our trust — not in our own understanding, but in the Lord, with all our heart. It’s a call to stop leaning on the fragile crutch of self-reliance and lean instead into the one who can actually make our paths straight. But this chapter doesn’t stop at trust; it moves quickly into honor — honoring God with our wealth and firstfruits, letting our resources reflect our reverence rather than our anxiety about scarcity. And then, tenderly, it turns to discipline. Solomon says not to despise the Lord’s correction, because discipline is proof of love, the way a good father shapes a child he delights in, not one he has given up on. Then the chapter shifts to praise wisdom itself — more precious than rubies, worth more than anything we could desire, the very foundation God used to lay the earth. When we find wisdom, we find something that offers long life, peace, and honor, something that lets us lie down at night without fear because our steps are secure. Sister, trusting God with all your heart doesn’t mean you understand everything. It means you submit anyway, you honor him anyway, and you let his discipline shape you instead of resenting it. That kind of trust is what makes your sleep sweet and your path straight, even when the way ahead isn’t fully clear.

  • ✦When facing hardship, ask whether God might be disciplining or refining you rather than assuming he has abandoned you.
  • ✦Let go of a plan you are white-knuckling and hand its outcome to God in prayer.
