Proverbs 5 — NIV

The Path Away from the Forbidden

Solomon warns urgently against the seductive words of the adulterous woman, whose path leads to death, and calls his son instead to rejoice in the wife of his youth and to keep his ways far from her.

Proverbs 5:1“Warning Against Adultery 5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight,”

Proverbs 5:2“2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.”

Proverbs 5:3“3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil;”

Proverbs 5:4“4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.”

Proverbs 5:5“5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.”

Proverbs 5:6“6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.”

Proverbs 5:7“7 Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say.”

Proverbs 5:8“8 Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house,”

Proverbs 5:9“9 lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity[a] to one who is cruel,”

Proverbs 5:10“10 lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another.”

Proverbs 5:11“11 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent.”

Proverbs 5:12“12 You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!”

Proverbs 5:13“13 I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors.”

Proverbs 5:14“14 And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.””

Proverbs 5:15“15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.”

Proverbs 5:16“16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?”

Proverbs 5:17“17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.”

Proverbs 5:18“18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.”

Proverbs 5:19“19 A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.”

Proverbs 5:20“20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?”

Proverbs 5:21“21 For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths.”

Proverbs 5:22“22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.”

Proverbs 5:23“23 For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.”

Drink from Your Own Well

“For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths.”

Proverbs 5:21

Chapter 5 is one of the most direct warnings in all of Proverbs, and it deserves to be read without flinching. Solomon describes the adulterous woman in vivid terms — her lips drip honey, her speech is smoother than oil — but he doesn’t stop at the sweetness. He tells us where that path actually leads: to death, to the grave, to steps that do not lead life. What makes this chapter so tender, though, is what Solomon offers in place of temptation. He doesn’t just say “avoid this,” he paints an alternative worth choosing: “Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.” He calls his son — and by extension, all of us — to rejoice in the faithful, covenant relationship God has given, rather than chasing something that looks sweeter but leads to ruin. This isn’t only about romantic temptation, though that application is real and important. It’s about the broader pattern of choosing what glitters in the moment over what is faithful and lasting. Solomon reminds us that our ways are in full view of the Lord — nothing is hidden, nothing is truly secret, and he examines all our paths. The closing warning is sobering: those who lack discipline are led astray by their own folly, not merely by outside forces. This chapter calls us to guard not just our actions but our appetites, to be satisfied with what God has actually given us, and to remember that every path, sweet or bitter, is walked in full view of the God who loves us enough to warn us.

Deeper Study

🌿Wisdom

Wisdom here means recognizing that what appears sweet or smooth in the moment can lead to death, and that true wisdom chooses long-term faithfulness over short-term pleasure. Contentment with what God has given is itself an act of wisdom.

  • ✦Identify one 'smooth' temptation in your life that promises pleasure but leads away from faithfulness, and name it honestly.
  • ✦Cultivate gratitude and delight for the relationships and provisions God has already given you.
  • ✦Build accountability into your life so that private struggles do not stay hidden and unaddressed.

📖Knowledge

This chapter reveals the true trajectory of sin that looks appealing at first — it ends in death, regret, and ruin. It also teaches that nothing about our lives is hidden from God's sight.

  • ✦The adulterous woman's speech is smoother than oil, but her end is bitter as gall (5:3-4).
  • ✦Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave (5:5).
  • ✦A person's ways are in full view of the Lord, who examines all paths (5:21).
  • ✦Lack of discipline and self-restraint leads people to be led astray by their own folly (5:23).

💡Understanding

Understanding this chapter means seeing that temptation rarely announces itself as dangerous — it disguises itself as sweet and satisfying. Real discernment requires looking past the immediate appeal toward the ultimate consequence.

  • ✦Examine areas of your life where something 'smooth' might be masking a destructive end.
  • ✦Practice remembering that God sees all your paths, letting that truth shape private decisions.
  • ✦Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 alongside this chapter for hope that God provides a way out of temptation.
