Deep Waters and a Lamp Within

“Do not say, "I’ll pay you back for this wrong!" Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.”

Proverbs 20:22

Proverbs 20 doesn’t shy away from hard truths. It opens with a warning about mockers and brawlers, reminding us that things which promise ease or escape can lead us astray from wisdom. Then it moves quickly to something more personal: the purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, and it takes insight to draw them out. Some of our own motives are hidden even from ourselves until someone wise — or the Holy Spirit Himself — helps us see clearly. The chapter is honest about how rare true faithfulness is. "Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?" It’s a gentle but sobering question, one that should make us examine our own follow-through rather than simply admire loyalty in others. Faithfulness is proven over time, in small daily actions, not just in declarations. When it comes to being wronged, Proverbs 20 offers a countercultural instruction: don’t say, "I’ll pay you back." Wait for the Lord, and He will avenge you. This is deeply freeing — you don’t have to carry the burden of settling every score. Vengeance was never meant to be yours to execute. Finally, the chapter says the human spirit is the lamp of the Lord, shedding light on our inmost being. God has placed something in you meant to illuminate truth, not conceal it. Today, ask Him to draw out your heart’s hidden purposes, to make you one of the rare faithful ones, and to hold your hurts so you don’t have to avenge them yourself.
