A Stream in His Hand

“A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.”

Proverbs 21:2

Proverbs 21 begins with a stunning image: even the heart of a king is like a stream of water in the Lord’s hand, directed wherever He wills. If the most powerful human heart is subject to God’s guidance, then no authority, circumstance, or difficult person you face today is outside His reach. You can bring your concerns about leaders, bosses, or family members to the God who channels hearts like water. The chapter quickly turns inward, though: a person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. It’s tempting to justify ourselves, to assume our intentions excuse our actions. But God isn’t fooled by self-assessment; He weighs what’s underneath. Doing what is right and just, the chapter says, matters more to Him than religious performance. Proverbs 21 doesn’t shy away from naming what erodes a home — repeated quarreling makes even a rooftop corner preferable to shared space. It’s a vivid warning about the corrosive effect of constant conflict, worth taking seriously whether you’re the one quarreling or the one enduring it. Meanwhile, ignoring the cry of the poor is described as a door that closes behind you — one day you may cry out and not be answered. The chapter closes with hope: whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor, and guarding your mouth keeps you from calamity. Today, trust God with the hearts you cannot control, ask Him to weigh and refine your own heart, and choose your words as a guard against needless strife.

  • ✦Pray specifically for a leader’s heart to be directed by the Lord.
  • ✦Ask God to weigh your heart honestly rather than trusting your own self-assessment.
