The Friend Who Tells the Truth

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Proverbs 27:17

Proverbs 27 begins with a humble reminder: we don’t know what tomorrow holds, so boasting about our plans is foolish. This isn’t a call to anxiety but to humility — holding our futures loosely and trusting God with what we cannot see. The heart of this chapter, though, is friendship. It’s startling how directly it praises honest correction over silent affection: “Wounds from a friend can be trusted.” A real friend will risk an uncomfortable conversation because they love you enough to tell the truth, while flattery — “an enemy multiplies kisses” — only feels good in the moment. The picture of iron sharpening iron is one of the most beloved images in Proverbs. Growth often requires friction — a friend who challenges our thinking, questions our excuses, or simply reflects back who we’re becoming. Verse 19’s image of water reflecting a face reminds us that our lives, our choices and words, reveal the state of our hearts, often more than we intend. Let this chapter push you toward friendships with substance: people who will speak hard truths in love, and who deserve your honesty in return. Avoid isolating yourself with only comfortable voices. Instead, welcome the sharpening, trusting that a wound from someone who loves you is far safer than the smooth words of someone who doesn’t.

📖Knowledge

This chapter offers knowledge about the true nature of friendship and self-awareness — that honest love may sting, and that our hearts are revealed through our lives, much as a face is reflected in water.

  • ✦We do not know what a day will bring, so boasting about tomorrow is unwise.
  • ✦Open rebuke from someone who loves you is better than hidden, silent love.
  • ✦A friend’s honest wounds can be trusted more than an enemy’s flattery.
  • ✦One person sharpens another, just as iron sharpens iron.

💡Understanding

Understanding sees that discomfort in relationships isn’t always a sign something is wrong — sometimes it’s the very friction that produces growth and character. It also discerns the difference between flattery and genuine care.

  • ✦Evaluate your closest friendships: do they sharpen you or only flatter you?
  • ✦The next time a friend offers correction, resist defensiveness and consider it prayerfully.
  • ✦Let go of controlling tomorrow’s outcomes and trust God with your plans.
