Bold as a Lion, Honest Before God

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”

Proverbs 28:13

There’s a striking picture at the start of chapter 28: the wicked flee even when no one is chasing them, but the righteous stand bold as a lion. Guilt makes people jumpy and fearful, always looking over their shoulder. A clear conscience, on the other hand, produces a settled courage — not because life is easy, but because there’s nothing to hide. This chapter values integrity over wealth: better to be poor and blameless than rich and crooked. It’s a countercultural measure of success, one that asks what kind of person we are becoming rather than what we’re accumulating. Chasing fantasies and quick riches, the chapter warns, leads to poverty and punishment, while faithful, steady work brings real blessing. Verse 13 offers one of the most freeing truths in all of Proverbs: concealing sin doesn’t lead to prosperity, but confessing and renouncing it leads to mercy. So often we hide our failures out of fear, but God’s design is the opposite — honesty opens the door to grace, while secrecy keeps us stuck. Finally, the chapter warns against self-trust, reminding us that those who rely on their own judgment are foolish, while those who walk in wisdom are kept safe. Today, consider where you might be hiding instead of confessing, or trusting yourself instead of walking humbly with God. Boldness like a lion comes not from perfection, but from an honest life before Him.

🌿Wisdom

Wisdom in this chapter is inseparable from honesty and humility — it distrusts self-reliance and prizes confession over concealment, integrity over quick gain.

  • ✦Confess a hidden struggle to God or a trusted person instead of concealing it.
  • ✦Choose steady, faithful work over shortcuts that promise quick riches.
  • ✦Examine an area where you’ve been trusting your own judgment instead of God’s wisdom.

💡Understanding

Understanding perceives that boldness and fear are rooted in the state of the conscience, not in circumstances. It also discerns that mercy is available, but only through honesty rather than hiding.

  • ✦Notice where fear or restlessness in your life might be tied to unconfessed guilt.
  • ✦Practice contentment with steady, faithful progress instead of shortcuts.
  • ✦Ask God to show you where self-trust has replaced dependence on His wisdom.
