Strength, Dignity, and the Fear of the Lord

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Proverbs 31:30

Proverbs closes with the words King Lemuel’s mother taught him — counsel that begins not with the famous woman of noble character, but with a call to speak up for the voiceless, to judge fairly, and to defend the poor and needy. Even before the well-known portrait begins, this chapter grounds worthy leadership and character in justice and compassion for others. Then comes the beloved description of the wife of noble character, worth far more than rubies. She is not passive or ornamental; she works vigorously, trades wisely, plans ahead, and cares for her household with strength. Her hands are open to the poor and needy — her strength serves others, not just herself. What’s striking is verse 25: she is “clothed with strength and dignity” and can laugh at the days to come. Her security isn’t rooted in circumstances but in character and trust in God, which frees her from fear of the future. This isn’t a portrait of perfection to feel crushed by, but an example of a life ordered around wisdom, diligence, and generosity. The chapter’s final word is the key to everything before it: charm is deceptive and beauty fades, but a woman who fears the Lord is the one truly worth praising. Whatever your season — whether you resonate with the vigor, the generosity, or simply the desire for security not based on appearance — let this final proverb settle your heart. Reverence for God, not perfection, is the foundation of a life worth praising.
